Chapter Six

The next six weeks flew by. Zane was on his own handling Van Rex’s account, finding new ways to keep the rock star, an unexpectedly reserved man offstage, in the public eye. He enjoyed the work he was doing, and was also becoming better at networking and finding clients for the company. He spent his days glad-handing and sweet-talking prospective clients, updating Van’s social media sites, arranging photo shoots, and attending publicity events, and he spent his nights making love to Diego.

The feelings he had for his longtime friend were growing daily, and though Zane had never been in love, he was almost certain that it was what was happening to him. He hadn’t ever thought it would be possible for him, what with his bad boy ways and military career. The things he’d seen, the things he’d done, as boy and man, had left him harder and more jaded, and he had drifted from one man to the next without any interest in more than hard fucking to take the edge off.

And then he met Diego, and suddenly, his need for unremarkable sex with insignificant men completely disappeared. In its place was a need to be with Diego for every moment, to share his life, to know him…to love him and to be loved by him. This was what he wanted, what he had always wanted, if he were to be honest about it. And now he had him, he was never going to lose him again.

Diego’s exhibition was in two days. He had been ecstatic when his pieces had been chosen for inclusion in the new artists’ exhibition, and they had planned their first weekend away to celebrate Zane’s birthday so it would coincide with the show, and they could enjoy New York City and each other at the same time. Diego was coming over to spend the night, and then they’d take the train into the city together in the morning. He was bringing dinner, and Zane found himself waiting impatiently for the doorbell to chime.

He hadn’t yet been able to control his heart rate whenever he saw Diego, and this time was no exception. He opened the door and emotions flooded his system. Backing away, he let his lover walk past him before closing and locking the door. The scent of food assaulted him, and his belly rumbled, reminding him that he hadn’t eaten all day. But before food, he needed a taste of Diego. Following him into the kitchen, Zane backed him up against the counter by the sink and wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close.

“Evening,” he said, before taking Diego’s lips.

The kiss started off slow and easy, but before long, as Diego’s hands found their way under his shirt and up his belly, Zane’s hunger changed. And when Diego loosened his belt, unbuttoned his fly and slid his hands down over Zane’s ass, pulling him in even further, Zane lost it.

“Shit, Diego!” His exclamation was lost in Diego’s wild kiss.

His lover’s voice was a rumble of sound in his ear.
